Baby Lord

I've written a festival holiday version of the Supremes song "Baby Love" called "Baby Lord". Here are the lyrics. Basically, it's Mother Mary talking to Baby Jesus about the real reason behind Christmas.

Note: If you'd like to share this song, you can either link to this post (http://www.xanga.com/iamtheblog/685693349/baby-lord.html), or else you must include the copyright notices listed on top so that the original writers (and I) get credit. Hope you enjoy!

Edit: I've done a quick karaoke-style recording of the song. I'm not a professional singer, but this will give you an idea of what it would sound like. The complete lyrics (including back-up vocals) can be found below.

PS Here's a link to some comments about the song.

Very amusing indeed (and you're not really a bad singer at all)!

I'm currently reading Sir James George Frazer's The Golden Bough and in the chapter 'The Transference of Evil' he explains what he calls the very savage idea that any evil - be it illness, lucklessness or sin - can be transferred from an individual to an animate or inanimate object. In primitive thought it is quite reasonable that an animal, or man could die in substitution for someone else.
This is precisely what the story of Jesus is all about - the transference of the sins of the people to a scapegoat: Jesus. This is still seen as something we should look up to. Primitive indeed!

Thanks for the feedback on the song, I'm glad you liked it. I'm glad you found it amusing, I was hoping it was funny and not too "preachy", so to speak.

I haven't read The Golden Bough, although I have seen it referenced before. Thank you for mentioning it, it sounds like a very interesting read. It makes sense that Christ's crucifixion would fall under the idea of transference of evil that you mentioned. I once believed that Jesus fulfilled this role, although I didn't quite think of it in those words. I think I just never examined the idea too closely while I was a believer, I was just taught to accept it. Now the idea seems rather silly. Christians should start saying that Christ is the scapegoat for their sins (or perhaps they would prefer "holy scapegoat"?).
